Societies seem to be the low finch on the finch pole. They are used for fosters for Gouldians and a lot of people don't pay much attention to them as they do the more expensive and hard to find species. I just read a post on another forum where someone called them "dirty" and does not mix them with their other finches.
So I decided to have a board just for them so new finch owners don't get the wrong impression about them. Breeders are working with different mutations of them so different colors are always showing up.
I have had societies for a few years now and they were my first finches. This is what my experience has been with them:
* No matter how many nests you have in their cage they will all pile in one nest. * Recently I had babies that were about 2 weeks old and they got smashed flat, there were four, but one has survived. I did take some adults out so there would not be so many in the nest. * No two societies look the same. Each one is different. * They are good eaters, they will eat anything you put in their cage. * They take baths constantly no matter how many times you change their water. * They will also poop in their water, even though I have a hanging waterer with a small tray for them to get water out of and they still manage to poop in it. * They are good parents but just don't have too many in one cage. * They tolerate nest checks and I have even cleaned their nest with babies in it and they went right back. * I started with two and now have over 40 societies not counting the ones I sold over the past year. Just be prepared to have extra cages if you let them breed.
Societies are entertaining, good parents, not delicate or hard to raise, and get along with other species. If you are just starting with finches this would be a good species to begin with.

My two self fawn societies that my daughter bought me on 5/29/12. I have not put them with any males until I find 2 fawn selfs males to put with them. But they may be hard to find here, my daughter got them from a breeder but he does not have anymore.
